- Bronchopulmonary segment: wedge-shaped, pyramidal sector of a lung lobe, aerated by its own segmental (tertiary) bronchus.
Structural Features
- Each segment: a subdivision of a lung lobe, pyramidal in shape with apex toward the hilum and base toward the lung surface, surrounded by connective tissue.
- Surgically resectable: the smallest independent anatomical, functional and surgical unit of the lung, so a diseased segment can be isolated and removed without affecting adjacent segments.
