A burn is an injury caused by the application of heat, chemicals, electricity, radiation or friction resulting in destruction of tissues.
Classification According to Depth
First-Degree Burn (Epidermal Burn)
- Involves only the epidermis
- Redness (erythema)
- Painful
- No blister formation
- Heals without scarring
- Example: sunburn
Second-Degree Burn (Dermo-Epidermal Burn)
Superficial Second Degree
- Epidermis and superficial dermis involved
- Blisters present
- Severe pain
- Heals with minimal scarring
Deep Second Degree
- Deeper dermal involvement
- Fewer blisters
- May heal with scarring
