- Above: bounded by the xiphoid process and costal margins.
- Below: bounded by the iliac crest, groin fold, pubic tubercle, crest and symphysis.
- Separated from the posterior wall by the midaxillary line.
- Clinically the term includes both the front and side walls of the abdomen.
Surface Landmarks and Abdominal Planes
- McBurney's point: junction of the medial two-thirds and lateral one-third of the spino-umbilical line, overlying the base of the appendix.
- Murphy's point: where the linea semilunaris meets the right subcostal margin, overlying the fundus of the gallbladder.
