  • Two types: indirect (through the deep inguinal ring) and direct (through the posterior wall).

Indirect and Direct Inguinal Hernia

  • Indirect inguinal hernia: abdominal viscus (e.g. loop of intestine) protrudes into the inguinal canal through the deep inguinal ring.
  • Direct inguinal hernia: abdominal viscus protrudes into the inguinal canal by pushing its posterior wall.
  • Indirect inguinal hernia is the most common hernia in the inguinal region.
