Cerebellum: connections, functions and clinical lesions

  • Cerebellum: largest part of the hindbrain, in the posterior cranial fossa deep to the tentorium cerebelli, separated from pons and medulla by the fourth ventricle.
  • Weightabout 150 g (second largest part of the brain)
  • Connected to the brainstem by three pairs of cerebellar peduncles.

Parts and Subdivisions

Organization

  • Two lateral cerebellar hemispheres joined by a median worm-like vermis; superior vermis blends with the hemispheres, inferior vermis is set apart at the vallecula.
  • Anatomically forms three lobes:
    • anterior lobe (superior surface, before fissura prima)
    • posterior/middle lobe (between fissura prima and posterolateral fissure)
    • flocculonodular lobe (smallest, inferior surface)
