Internal capsule: parts, relations, fibres and clinical lesions

• Internal capsule: compact band of projection fibres connecting cerebral cortex to brainstem and spinal cord, continuous with corona radiata above and crus cerebri of midbrain below.
• Lies between thalamus and caudate nucleus medially, lentiform nucleus laterally; carries ascending (sensory) and descending (motor) fibres for the opposite body half.

Organization

• In horizontal section: V-shaped compact bundle of white fibres, concavity directed laterally.
• Five parts: anterior limb, genu, posterior limb, retrolentiform part, sublentiform part.
