- Face develops from five facial processes around the stomodeum, appearing by the end of the 4th week.
- Palate develops in two stages between the 6th and 12th weeks: primary palate (frontonasal process) and secondary palate (maxillary processes).

- Maxillary processes (paired): lateral upper lip, upper cheek.
- Mandibular processes (paired): chin, lower lip, lower cheek.
