• The gastrointestinal tract develops from the primitive gut, formed in the 4th week of IUL by incorporation of the yolk sac's dorsal part during folding of the embryo.
• The tube runs from the buccopharyngeal membrane to the cloacal membrane and is divided into foregut, midgut and hindgut.
