Karyotyping: process of arranging the chromosomes of a cell in a standard sequence to study its complete chromosomal complement; the arranged set is the karyotype.
Method
An enlarged photomicrograph of a stained metaphase chromosome spread is taken; individual chromosomes are cut out, homologous chromosomes paired, and arranged from longest to shortest.
Denver Classification of Chromosomes
Denver system of classification (1960) arranges all chromosomes, including sex chromosomes, into seven groups (A to G), based on size, centromere position, arm length-ratio, and presence of satellite bodies.
