Autoerotic (Accidental) Asphyxia
Definition: Autoerotic (sexual) asphyxia is a form of accidental asphyxia in which partial asphyxiation is deliberately induced to enhance sexual excitement, orgasm or masturbation.
Characteristics
- Usually accidental
- Victim is commonly a male
- Occurs during masturbation or sexual fantasy
- Partial suspension is common
- Escape mechanism often fails
Scene Findings
- Body usually found in partial hanging
- Pornographic literature/videos may be present
- Evidence of masturbation
- Seminal stains may be present
- Elaborate self-rescue mechanisms may be seen
- Female clothing or fetishistic articles may be present
