Definition
Suspended animation (apparent death) is a condition in which the signs of life are greatly reduced and cannot be detected by ordinary clinical methods, although life is still present. The person appears dead but is actually alive.
Characteristics
- Respiration becomes extremely feeble.
- Heartbeat becomes very weak.
- Pulse may not be palpable.
- Consciousness may be absent.
- Vital signs are difficult to detect by routine examination.
- Recovery may occur if proper treatment is instituted.
