  • Placenta: vascular, disc-shaped fetomaternal organ attaching the fetus to the uterine wall via the umbilical cord.
  • Fetal component develops from chorion frondosum; maternal component develops from decidua basalis.

  • Chorionic villi over decidua capsularis degenerate to form smooth chorion laeve; villi over decidua basalis persist and grow extensively as chorion frondosum.
