Definition

  • The countercurrent mechanism generates and maintains an increasing osmolality gradient along the medullary pyramid, outer layer to innermost part, concentrating urine.
  • It depends on integrated functioning of the loop of Henle, vasa recta and collecting duct; medullary osmolality reaches about 1200 to 1400 mosm/kg of H2O innermost.
