Common peroneal nerve injury

  • Common peroneal nerve: smaller terminal branch of the sciatic nerve, formed in the lower third of the thigh above the popliteal fossa.

Origin and Course

  1. Passes through the popliteal fossa along its upper lateral boundary, deep to the biceps femoris tendon.
  2. Winds around the lateral aspect of the neck of the fibula.
  3. En route it crosses plantaris, the lateral head of gastrocnemius, and the fibular attachment of soleus.
  4. Deep to peroneus longus, it terminates by dividing into the deep peroneal nerve and the superficial peroneal nerve.
