Tibial nerve injury

2 min read

  • Tibial nerve: larger terminal branch of the sciatic nerve, arising above the popliteal fossa.
  • Passes through the popliteal fossa and posterior compartment of the leg, then enters the sole deep to the flexor retinaculum, dividing into medial and lateral plantar nerves.

Course and Distribution

  • Motor: supplies all muscles of the posterior compartment of the leg directly, and all muscles of the sole through the medial and lateral plantar nerves.
  • Sensory: the medial and lateral plantar nerves supply the whole skin of the sole of the foot and toes, including the dorsal aspect of their distal phalanges.
