Adipocere
Adipocere is a postmortem change in which body fat is converted into a waxy, soap-like substance by hydrolysis and hydrogenation.
Synonyms: grave wax, corpse wax.
Mechanism: body fat → hydrolysis + hydrogenation → fatty acids formed → adipocere.
Conditions favouring formation: moist environment, presence of water, warm temperature, absence of air, abundant body fat.
Time required: may begin within a few weeks; well developed after several months.
Characteristics: greyish-white or yellowish-white; greasy and waxy; cheese-like consistency; characteristic rancid odour.
Common sites: cheeks, breasts, buttocks, abdomen.
