Putrefaction is the decomposition of the body after death by the action of bacteria, resulting in progressive breakdown of tissues with the formation of gases, fluids and simpler substances.
Causes — Bacterial Action
The principal cause is the action of saprophytic bacteria, mainly originating from the intestines and respiratory tract.
Common organisms: Clostridium species, coliform bacilli and other anaerobic bacteria.
