Definition

A poison is any substance which, when introduced into the living body by any route, can cause ill health or death by its chemical action.

Classification of Poisons (According to Action on the Body)

Poisons are grouped by the way they act on the body.

A. Corrosives

Produce destruction of tissues at the site of contact.

Examples:

  • Sulphuric acid
  • Nitric acid
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Caustic soda
  • Phenol

B. Irritants

Produce inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.

1. Inorganic Irritants

  • Arsenic
  • Mercury
  • Phosphorus
  • Copper

2. Organic Irritants

  • Vegetable: Castor, Croton, Abrus
  • Animal: Snake venom, Insect poisons
